How much revenue is your pixel actually missing?
Every conversion your browser pixel fails to record is a sale your bidding algorithm never learns from. The trouble is that the loss is invisible: the pixel does not report an error when it fails to fire, it just quietly reports a smaller number. Here is where those conversions go and how to get them back.
Where the conversions disappear
- Ad blockers strip tracking scripts before they run. A meaningful share of shoppers, especially younger and more technical ones, browse with one installed.
- Browser tracking prevention in Safari and Firefox caps or deletes the cookies pixels rely on, so by the time a shopper buys, the click that brought them in has been forgotten.
- Page load failures mean the conversion tag never fires. A slow thank-you page, an early tab close, or a checkout that redirects oddly all cost you the event.
- Cross-device journeys break the chain when someone clicks an ad on their phone and buys on their laptop.
Add these up and many stores lose a third or more of their conversions to the browser. You cannot see the gap directly, which is exactly why it persists.
Why it costs more than the missing report
A missing conversion is not just a reporting inaccuracy. Google and Meta optimise bidding on the conversions they receive. When a third of your sales are invisible to them, Smart Bidding is learning from incomplete data. It underinvests in campaigns that are actually working, because it cannot see the sales they drove, and your reported ROAS looks worse than reality, which tempts you to cut profitable spend.
How to estimate your own loss
The cleanest check is to compare the orders in your store’s back office over a period against the conversions your ad platform recorded for the same period and attribution window. If your store shows 100 orders from paid traffic and the platform recorded 65, you have a rough sense of the gap. It will not be exact, but it is usually eye-opening.
Getting the conversions back
The fix is server-side tracking: reporting the sale to the ad platform from your own server, with the click id attached, instead of relying on the browser. The order data comes straight from your store, so it does not depend on the shopper’s browser cooperating. Trakt does this for Google, Meta, Microsoft, and TikTok from one integration, deduplicated against your existing pixels so nothing counts twice, with a shadow mode so you can see exactly what would be sent before anything goes live.
