Server-side tracking on Shopify, explained simply
If you run ads to a Shopify store, some of your sales are invisible to Google and Meta. Server-side tracking is how you make them visible again. Here is what it means in plain terms.
The problem, in one sentence
Your ad platforms learn which ads work from a pixel that runs in the shopper’s browser, and browsers now block, cap, or drop a large share of what that pixel tries to report.
What server-side tracking changes
Instead of trusting the browser to phone home, server-side tracking sends the sale from a server, using Shopify’s own record of the order. Shopify knows the order happened, what it was worth, and what was in it. That record is authoritative and it does not depend on the shopper’s browser, their ad blocker, or their cookie settings. The conversion is reported to the ad platform from a place none of that can interfere with.
How the match actually works
The clever part is connecting an anonymous browsing session to a confirmed order. When a shopper reaches checkout, there is a checkout token that identifies that checkout. A first-party pixel records the click id (the GCLID from Google, the fbclid from Meta) against that token. Moments later, Shopify’s order webhook arrives on the server with the real revenue and the same token. Joining the two ties the sale to the exact ad click that earned it.
The storefront supplies the identity, the order webhook supplies the truth, and the sale is never trusted to the browser.
Why not just use a custom pixel?
Shopify’s custom pixels run in a sandboxed frame that cannot see the real page URL, so they cannot reliably read the click id that makes attribution work. That is why proper server-side tracking on Shopify is done through an app, not a snippet you paste in. It installs in one click and needs no theme edits.
What you get
Once it is running, the conversions your browser pixel was dropping are reported to Google and Meta with the click id attached, deduplicated so nothing counts twice, and refund-aware so returns reverse against the campaign that earned the sale. Bidding starts optimising on your real revenue instead of the fraction the browser managed to capture.
Trakt does this as a one-click Shopify app, with a shadow mode that shows you exactly which conversions you are missing before anything is sent to your ad account.
